Plyometrics for Cycling

Plyometrics for Cycling

Could Plyometrics help you be a better cyclist? Plyometrics is a specific type of training that is designed to produce fast, powerful explosive movements and also will improve the functions of the nervous system.   Plyometric movements are performed by loading up a muscle and then imagescontracting in rapid sequence.  Think of squatting down toward the floor and like a loaded spring being released launching toward the ceiling with  great force. Plyometric training is used to increase the speed and force or power of the muscle contractions without increasing maximal strength. This is the ideal type of training that can increase cycling performance.

Muscular power is determined by how long it takes for strength to be converted into speed.  This is perfect for cycling as it will no doubt have a positive performance impact on your sprinting, attacking and accelerating out of corners.  This form of training is especially great for mountain bike and cyclocross athletes with the constant need for short explosive P90X_Plyometricsbursts. I recommend training 2 x’s a week for maximum benefit and allow 48 hours between sessions minimum to give your body full recovery. Training for power with plyometrics no doubt will have a positive effect on cycling strength and speed.  Not sure where to begin? message me and I will help you find the right program to help you improve. Almost all the programs in my workouts have a plyometrics workout that would dramatically improve your performance.
